Let’s learn something a bit more difficult today. It’s not so difficult but compared to previous lessons, it can be. I’m going to teach two consonants and a subscript of a consonant by spelling the word “cat” in Khmer. Cat is pronounced “chmah.” Let’s learn some letters by breaking this word down. Cat in Khmer is spelled ឆ្មា

First, we write the consonant Chaw, which is this: ឆ and it makes the ch- sound in the word chmah.

Secondly, underneath consonant Chaw is the subscript of consonant Mor ម which makes the M- sound. Instead of writing consonant Mor in this word, we use its subscript, which is underneath ឆ and together it looks like this: ឆ្ម

Lastly, to spell the rest of the word chmah, we attach the vowel Ah to ឆ and all together it spells chmah ឆ្មា

I hope this all made sense! Thanks for learning with me.

Take care,

Molly
